Leader Training

Youth Protection Training (YPT)

While our goal is to have all parents and volunteers in Pack 404 complete Youth Protection Training (YPT) – it is a requirement for all registered leaders. Bay Area Council will not process leader applications without a completed YPT certificate.

To complete YPT, log into your My Scouting account. Click the large shield image on the right-hand side.

That will open a new window/tab and you’ll see the below screen. Click “+Add Plan” in the first box, which is titled “Youth Protection Training – MANDATORY”.

Once you’ve added the training to your plan, the screen will refresh showing your enrollment, and the training at 0% complete. To launch the training, click the dark blue title link “Youth Protection…” (though it may be partially obscured by the “NEW” icon).

The training is divided into three different sessions, and can be taken at different times.  This allows you to break the roughly one hour training into smaller 20 minute sessions.

Helpful Hint: When navigating any of the training materials, use the “< Back” link within the page (as shown below), and not your browser’s back button.

Training is complete once you’ve finished all three sessions and passed the test.

Leadership Position Training

Position training is required for the key leadership roles – Committee Member, Den Leader, and Cubmaster (including assistants in these last two roles).  Classroom training is available on a periodic basis from the district, council, and neighboring council.

Online training can be completed at home, at your own pace.  Like YPT, online position training is accessed through the My Scouting portal.  Log in, click “Menu” and then “My Dashboard”.

Click “Training Center” at the top of the page, then click the “Cub Scouting” entry from the menu.

From here, click “+Add Plan” for your specific role – Cubmaster, Den Leader or Committee Member.

Each training has three sections: Before the First Meeting, First 30 Days, and Position Trained. Each of the first two sections takes about an hour, and the final “Position Trained” section takes between one-and-a-half and two hours.

Each section is broken down into individual sessions, as shown in the image below.  Each individual session lasts between 5-15 minutes. You can get a full breakdown of all the leader position training topics in this PDF.

Additional Training

Once you’ve spent time in your Leadership role, there is additional training available to help you and the Pack deliver a better Scouting experience.  These topics can be found at the bottom of the Training Center listings under “Expanded Learning”.

Trainings of interest to leaders and parents include: Program Safety, BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation), STEM, and Journey to Excellence.
